Why I drew a protea — and turned it into a class

There are days when I feel like the world is just… too much.
Too fast. Too loud. Too full.

Those are the days when I reach for my pen.
Not because I have a big idea. Not because I’m trying to make something beautiful.
But because I need to slow down.

There’s something almost sacred about drawing with no rush.
Just one line. Then another.
A little dot here.
A pause.
A breath.

I didn’t always know I needed this.
For a long time, I thought drawing had to be about results. Finishing things. Impressing someone.
But the older I get, the more I find comfort in the quiet things.

Like the sound of the pen on paper.
Or how a flower slowly unfolds under your hand — not for anyone else, just for you.

Lately, I’ve been drawing proteas.
They're wild, structured, unapologetically themselves.
And there’s something about their presence that makes me feel grounded — like I, too, can take up space gently.

I spent a few slow mornings drawing one.
Then framing it. Then staring at it.
And I thought, maybe someone else out there needs this feeling too.

So I made a class.

line art class - protea flower drawing class

It’s called Bold Floral Line Art: Draw & Frame Your Own, and it’s now live on Skillshare.

It’s not a class about being perfect.
It’s not even about “getting better at art”.
It’s about making space —
for your hands,
for your breath,
for yourself.

We draw a protea flower, line by line.
We use broken hatching and stippling — two techniques I always return to when the world feels too noisy.
And in the end, you’ll have a finished artwork that’s yours to keep, frame, or just quietly sit with.

If that sounds like something your heart needs right now,
I’d love to have you join me.
